Types of Logs

Douglas Fir

Characteristics:

- Because of its strength is one of the best materials for timber frames
- Very strong structurally
- Red and blond colored
- Medium rot resistance
- medium insect resistance

Comments: Most log shells have douglas fir for the roof system or quite often the complete shell is made from douglas fir. Approximately half of our business is douglas fir.

Western Red Cedar

Characteristics:

- 30% less strength when compared with Douglas fir.
- Good for dry and wet conditions because of its rot resistance and ability to dry fast without checking (cracking)
- Approximately half our business is Western Red Cedar
- Varies in color; can be red, brown or blond.
- Very stable
- Flared end adds character

Yellow Cedar

Characteristics:

- Very strong
- Rot resistant

Pine

Characteristics:

- Medium strength
- Blue stain as a possibility
- Stable

Spruce

Characteristics:

- Bright color
- Medium strength
